'There are better drugs to treat diabetes-related eye diseases'

Dr Gopal, who specialises in vitreo-retinal surgeries, said that the stem cell therapy is being done in corneal diseases and is useful in improving the success rate of corneal grafts following acid/alkali burns in the eye. He said that diabetic retinopathy is on the rise in the country, but the good news is that now we have better drugs to deal with diabetes macular oedema in which fluid collects in the central part of the retina. "There are anti-VEGF injections as well as longer acting steroids which have an effect for six months instead of the earlier two months," he said. Read more
